Sustaining the Productivity of Planted Forests

چکیده
Conversion of natural forests to plantations, particularly in the tropics, has drawn global attention and concern. Moreover, plantation forestry is on the rise, especially in tropical and sub-tropical regions where growth rates are rapid. Even in the United States where even-age silviculture is being de-emphasized on public land (only about 15Oh of all plantings in recent years), the area in new plantings on all ownership has averaged 1 .l 1 million ha annually for the last decade, ranging from a low of 979 thousand ha in 1993 to the all-time high of 1.37 million ha in 1988 (Moulton, et al. 1996). Most of this is in the southern pine region. Since global and domestic demands for wood products will continue to rise in the 21st century, de-emphasis of timber management on public forests and the reclassification of much natural forest tq. protected status places an unprecedented burden on planted forests on private lands to meet the needs of a wooddemanding public. Pressures will bear particularly on industrial plantations of the South and Pacific Northwest to be more productive than ever. But there is much skepticism that high rates of plantation productivity can be maintained for long periods with repeated cropping. Addressing this criticism requires a definition and understanding of productivity that cuts across all intended uses of plantations.

Productivity as related to diversity and age in planted versus natural forests
Aim Little is known about the performance of plantations relative to natural forests of the same climate zone and age. China has more plantations than any other country as a consequence of massive afforestation efforts. We use data from China to comparatively examine tree biomass and productivity of planted and natural stands in relation to climate zone, latitude, elevation, age and species div...
متن کاملForest Biomass and Net Primary Productivity in Southwestern China: A Meta-Analysis Focusing on Environmental Driving Factors
Biomass and net primary productivity (NPP) are important factors for studying terrestrial carbon storage and the carbon cycle. Using data from existing literature, this study synthesized and analyzed a comprehensive database of direct field observations of forest biomass and NPP for Southwestern China. The biomass of mature natural forests and mature planted forests range from 81.2 Mg ̈ha ́1 to 6...
متن کاملLarge-scale assessment of regeneration and diversity in Mediterranean planted pine forests along ecological gradients
Aim There is increasing concern regarding sustainable management and restoration of planted forests, particuIarly in the Mediterranean Basin where pine species have been widely used. The aim of this study was to analyse the environmental and structural characteristics of Mediterranean planted pine forests in relation to natural pine forests. Specifically, we assessed recruitment and woody speci...
متن کاملEvaluation of Nonlinear Height-Diameter Models of Two Important Species of Turkish Pine (Pinus brutia) and Mediterranean Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens var. horizontalis), in the Planted Forests
Knowledge about the relationship between tree height (H) and diameter at breast height (D) is crucial for forest planning, monitoring, biomass estimation, and forest stands dynamics description. In this study, 20 different height-diameter models were evaluated to estimate accurately the height of the trees of Pinus brutia and Cupressus sempervirens var. horizontalis species in Arabdagh region (...
متن کاملElevated CO2 does not increase eucalypt forest productivity on a low-phosphorus soil
Rising atmospheric CO2 stimulates photosynthesis and productivity of forests, o setting CO2 emissions. Elevated CO2 experiments in temperate planted forests yielded ∼23% increases in productivity over the initial years. Whether similar CO2 stimulation occurs in mature evergreen broadleaved forests on low-phosphorus (P) soils is unknown, largely due to lack of experimental evidence. This knowled...
